Unlocking YouTube's Power: Why I'm Geeking Out on the Platform
Jun 25, 2023I wanted to share why I'm GEEKING out on YouTube lately!
I started a YouTube channel almost 2 years ago but then put it on the back burner because it felt like so much work to put out content and I wasn’t seeing the rewards or the value of the platform.
I was wrong.
Here’s what changed and why I’m doubling down on YouTube to fuel my business for years to come:
Most of you know I LOVE LinkedIn as a way to drive business, and that hasn’t changed. But YouTube almost works opposite of LinkedIn, so creating a content marketing strategy using both can be a game changer.
1 – YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world (behind Google). It’s a great way to capture the attention of people that are actively LOOKING for solutions to their problems; and I believe it to be far less competitive than trying to drive traffic from organic Google searches.
2 – Content views GROW over time instead of disappearing in a few days. Most social content that you post is gone in a few hours if not days. What really grabbed my attention is some of my first vids posted on YouTube 2 years ago that I almost forgot about, are actually GROWING in views!
3 – YouTube Shorts are soon going to be discoverable by Google Search. This means that people will be able to find short form YouTube content (vids that are 60 seconds or less) when they search for various things (like how to create passive income). This could be a great new stream of traffic and potential buyers.
4 – YouTube Podcasts – What took so long for YT to get on board with Podcasting? Well now you can upload your podcast content and mark it as a podcast and YouTube will distribute it inside its YouTube Music app, this means more exposure for the same amount of work if you are already publishing a podcast or wanting to start one. One of my podcast interviews I put on YouTube has had 4x as much traffic as all the other podcast apps that it was distributed on (this illustrates my point about how search can be a game changer).
5 – Multiple ways to create passive income – Once your channel gets bumping you can make passive income through: advertising, sponsorships, subscriptions, merchandise, evergreen offers; and that’s before using it to funnel higher ticket offers.
As for the difficulty in creating content, I no longer see it that way. I can make long form content (vid or podcast) and repurpose some of that for short and medium form content on all platforms (socials, email list, blog, shorts/reels/TikTok). Now that I'm in the flow, its easy and expands my reach.
Here’s the kicker: YouTube is a long-term play. But I LIKE it like that!
I love things that take patience and resilience instead of a quick fix. Search engines take time to seed, but the payoff can be huge.
And like I said, it compliments LinkedIn, which is a great place to network and grow quickly.
If you are interested in exploring YouTube as a source of traffic or passive income for your business, I’d love to introduce you to my oldest friend (we met in 1978….) Mike Simmons, who is a YouTube consultant.
He helped a family grow a kids channel to 2 million followers in a few years and over $1 mil per year in income. He’s also been helping me with my channel and giving me valuable strategies and insights.
You can set up a 20 minute strategy session right here and he can help with some ideas as it relates to your business goals. Make sure to tell him that I sent you!
