How to Create Captivating Content for YouTube and Podcasts Episodes
Aug 21, 2023One of the biggest struggles some of my students have is how to create effective content, especially when it comes to long form content such as YouTube videos and Podcast episodes. Don’t worry, I got you covered and will share one of my favorite ‘content frameworks’ that I use for video’s and podcast episodes!
Why is this so important? ICYMI last week I dropped an episode of the High Value Skills Podcast where I share just how important it is to be a part of the Creator Economy (available on Apple and Spotify).
I believe the ability to grow a loyal audience through content is the true decentralized cryptocurrency (done right you eliminate the need for cold outreach).
Cold outreach takes time and honestly can be a pain in the ass. Why not use that time to sharpen your content skills so clients come to you?
I’ll save that convo for a later date, but here’s a 5 part content framework for you to use right now, it works great for video, blog posts, emails and podcast episodes. Copy and paste it and save for when you need to write a script for a YouTube video or Podcast episode.
Here we go:
Part 1 (title): create an attention-grabbing hook! One of the most important elements of creating content is the hook, which stops them from scrolling and tunes them into your content.
Good hooks usually create curiosity and make them want to find out what’s inside, or make a strong and bold statement.
(FYI…keep your eyes open…I’m working on a “Hook Formula” workbook to help you create killer hooks that get people to see your content, should be done next week. This will give you 100+ formulas you can use in your own content).
Part 2 (open loop): tell them what you are going to tell them (why it’s important, what’s a stake) and then create what’s called an open loop by letting them know you are going to give them a solution at the end.
Why is an open loop important? A lot of algorithms (for example YouTube and podcasting) look at time spent on the content to determine if it should promote it more. Creating an open loop keeps the curious and tuned in for the resolution.
Part 3 (the conflict): talk about the problem or pain point. You can also explain the reasons or causes for the problem. What happens when someone doesn’t do something about it (cost of inaction)?
Part 4 (the resolution): this is the part where you talk about solutions, desired outcomes, success, the transformation that comes from the journey. Drop value and share 3-5 things that can be done to help the audience with the problem.
Part 5 (CTA): This is your call to action! Tell the audience exactly what you want them to do next.
It’s kind of like a movie, isn’t it? In fact, some of the best movies in Hollywood use what's called the 'Hero's Journey' framework to make incredible scripts. This isn't quite the Hero's Journey but it's close and easy to understand and implement in your content.
Ok, let’s use this formula to script out a YouTube video (I’ll keep it short, this is just for demonstration).
Title: STOP saving for retirement (unless you like being broke) | Do THIS instead!
Open loop: Why is it that so many people fail miserably when it comes to saving enough money for retirement? And the few who do save enough are afraid of spending too much and outliving their savings, so they live in poverty. In this video I’ll break down the 3 main reasons why the idea of saving for retirement is an obsolete idea and give you a 3-step plan to make sure your income is actually growing instead of shrinking in your golden years!
Conflict: discuss retirement statistics 1, 2 & 3. Then cover these 3 problems, 40-hour work week, trading time for money, how retirement savings is a fast depleting resource and not a true asset.
Resolution: discuss the difference between net worth and cashflow generating assets, share 3 ways to create cashflow generating assets (investments, business, traffic & lead gen).
CTA: Wrap up the video by asking them to download my free PDF guide with 7 ways to start creating passive income, remind them to subscribe and share with someone who can use this message.
This formula can be used for both mid length (LinkedIn, Blog, Facebook, Email) or long form (Videos, podcast).
