Why People Chase Success And End Up So Unhappy
Nov 12, 2021Today On Mindset Hackers we are going to be talking about what I call the Dopamine Treadmill, when you constantly chase the symbols of success and still end up so unfulfilled and unhappy in life and why that happens from a neuroscience perspective.
I'll also give 5 tips on how to let happiness, success and wealth coexist together.
Matthew McConaughey said it best in Wolf of Wall Street:
"๐๐ฉ'๐จ ๐๐๐๐๐ช๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐."
"Come up with another brilliant idea. A 'Special idea'. Another stock to reinvest his earnings. And he will come back every single time. You keep them on the ferris wheel and keep it spinning, and spinning, and spinning."
This is why there can be so much wealth co-existing with so much unhappiness, anxiety and depression.
Dopamine is the 'molecule of more'.
It's all very intentional.
Social media 'likes'.
The sugar.
The salt.
Wall Street.
Madison Avenue.
Las Vegas.
Advertising.
Dopamine is the reward seeking chemical and is highest when the payoff is unpredictable, and companies know how to leverage it.
The cost of 'always chasing' is that it down regulates serotonin, the molecule of LOVE and being PRESENT, of SAVORING.
This is why there are so many millionaires and billionaires that are so unhappy.
But there are people who have it all and are happy, because they made 'the journey' the reward.
Wealth and happiness CAN co-exist but you've got to stop chasing and embrace.

In this podcast I mention David Goggins and how he makes 'embracing the suck' his reward. I'll leave this with a quote from David Goggins:
"If you can get though the things that you hate, on the other side you will find greatness."
